Lilly Launches Foundayo In The U.K., Extending The Oral Obesity Race Beyond The U.S.

Foundayo is approved in the U.K. for adults with obesity or who are overweight and have at least one weight-related comorbidity, and it is also indicated for type 2 diabetes. Analysts cited by BioSpace said Lilly may be better positioned outside the U.S. because Foundayo is a small-molecule drug, potentially supporting better margins and more pricing flexibility than a peptide rival.

Eli Lilly has launched its weight loss pill Foundayo in the U.K., adding a new front in the oral obesity market after the drug’s U.S. approval in April and its MHRA approval earlier this month.

The U.K. launch initially runs through private prescriptions, while Lilly works with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, according to The Guardian as cited by BioSpace. In the U.K., Foundayo is approved for adults with obesity or who are overweight and have at least one weight-related comorbidity, and the drug is also indicated for type 2 diabetes.

The Commercial Picture

The immediate competitive context is Novo Nordisk. The MHRA cleared Novo’s Wegovy pill in June, making it the first oral weight loss drug approved in the country and giving Novo a few months’ head start over Lilly.

BioSpace cited Srikripa Devarakonda, vice president of Biotechnology Equity Research at Truist Securities, saying she is more bullish on Foundayo outside of the U.S. She argued that Lilly’s advantage is the relative ease of manufacturing Foundayo as a small-molecule drug versus oral Wegovy’s peptide profile, which could support better margins.

That matters because, in Devarakonda’s view, markets outside the U.S. are more price-sensitive. She said Lilly may be able to compete more effectively with oral Wegovy on price points while still securing favorable volume growth.

The early revenue gap remains meaningful. Novo said its Wegovy pill reached over 3,000 patients in its first week following the January launch and generated DKK 3.22 billion, or $496 million, in the second quarter. Foundayo posted $98 million in Q2, its first quarter on the market.

What To Watch

For now, the U.K. launch broadens availability but does not yet establish broad public-market access, because Lilly is still working with NICE. The strategic signal is that Lilly’s international oral obesity push appears to rely less on first-mover advantage and more on whether a small-molecule product can compete on price and supply in markets where reimbursement and affordability are likely to shape uptake.
